Interpreting sequence
Enriching your V.R.I.O.
1
-
Export the content of the analysis carried out at this stage to one or more documents, for example, in PDF format.
-
Attach this document to a question posed to an AI (perplexity, for example). This question should seek to add differentiated assets by qualifying them according to the V.R.I.O. model, assets that maximize the potential to create a competitive advantage for the business in question. See example #1 : prompting below.
Visualizing success
2
-
Drawing on the list of qualified assets through V.R.I.O., determine the indicators whose monitoring would allow success to be measured. See example #2 : visualizing success below.
-
Link each key figure to contributing assets.
Phasing a project
3
Group the assets to be developed in phases, starting with a combination of
-
the most differentiating assets to increase competitive advantage over time;
-
the most profitable assets (those with the highest return on investment);
-
The most independent of the business model.
-
Then position the assets in question in this order on a P.E.R.T.
Interpreting V.R.I.O.
A foundation for project phasing
A key step Identifying the investments to be made and the order in which they should be addressed naturally follows from a three-step VRIO (see opposite).
Advantages
The benefits of interpreting a V.R.I.O. model in this way are :
-
Logical articulation of reasoning based on three criteria: competitive advantage, profitability, and business model independence. This last aspect deserves special attention. There are assets specific to a physical model, others to a virtual model, still others to a hybrid model, a network effect model, or a combination of these different models, to name just a few. And there are assets common to all models conceivable at this stage of the analysis ; these are considered the foundations of the future offering, and experience shows that identifying them upstream makes it easier to deduce the best model, rather than the other way around (determining the best model and then the core assets).
-
Establishing and visualizing a measurable objective, which can be quickly transposed into an operational dashboard.
-
Shaping a first concrete project.
A strategic approach Having the P.E.R.T of a first project, it becomes easier to design a decision tree capable of comparing several scenarios, in particular at the level of economic models (examples: franchise, two-sided platform publisher, information and training site).
Examples
Example #1 : prompting
Here is the status of the thinking conducted by a project leader in... (specify positioning) (attachments), according to the method specified here:... (possible link). Propose additional services or assets that maximize competitive advantage according to the VRIO framework (Value, Rarity, Imitability, Organization). Propose a minimum of 5 additional services per service category. Here are the categories considered:... (list them). Avoid being generic or too general; be specific.
Example #2 : visualizing success
Responsible agriculture. An analysis of grape ripeness in a vineyard, using patent-protected connected objects, is a key asset to be developed. This asset will be valuable, rare, and inimitable, and will benefit from a tailored organization, thus creating a sustainable competitive advantage. Two indicators of success could be:
- the average increase in the sugar content of grapes harvested by winegrowers using this device in a given region;
- the adoption rate of the device by winegrowers in that region.
