The comfort of strangers, by Ian McEwan. Tragic.
A drama without comedy. The intimacy and wanderings of a tourist couple in a city with a culture so different from their own never offer a moment of amusement. Mistakes have immediate and severe consequences. This continues until the denouement, a logical yet unexpected conclusion. A very good novel, masterfully crafted by a leading contemporary British writer. Not for the faint of heart.
